The Great Granola Debacle
By Camilla Garrison
This morning, Hannah Garrison attempted to bake her granola. Yesterday she had put together the dry ingredients, and today she hoped to finish it. At about ten AM, she put in the rest of the (wet) ingredients and a little before that, had preheated the oven. When the oven was ready, she put in three small trays full of granola on parchment paper. Well, about halfway through the baking, Hannah wanted to microwave a cup of coffee, and this particular oven she was using was attached to the microwave. So when she tried to start the microwave, she also accidentally cancelled the oven. By then it was too late, the oven was already cooling down, and the only way forward was to re-heat the oven. As Hannah and many of you may already have known, is when preheating an oven, it gets really very hot in there, to come up to temperature, and usually, you don’t have granola or anything else in the oven (hence pre-heat) So the top rack of granola was tragically burned, and not suitable for consumption by most. Thankfully though, the rest of the granola was spared, and was delicious!
Ingredients:
6 cups oats
1/2 cup quinoa-not cooked
3 cups nuts
2-4 cups seeds
2 cups coconut
1/2-1 cup oil
1-1 1/2 cup maple syrup
2 egg whites- frothed (optional)
1 teaspoon ginger powder (optional)
salt to taste
(fruits added after baking)
Directions:
In a large bowl, combine dry ingredients and stir it up. You can either put in the wet ingredients now, or do it tomorrow. Bake 45 minutes at 325 degrees Fahrenheit. If you are adding dried fruit, you can put them in after the granola is a little cooled in a big bowl.
