Summer Vacation Comes to an End

By Camilla Garrison

August 26th, 2024 was the first day back to school at The Grace School/Meeting Street. Students Camilla and Isaac Garrison began the Fifth and Eighth grades. Camilla Garrison, joins her class of 8 people, and Isaac Garrison joins their class of 28 students.

For the first week of school, children are staying in homeroom all morning in place of switching classes: Social Studies, Math, Science and ELA (English Language Arts) then, have one more class until Lunch and Recess, after that, they either have S.E.L (Social Emotional Learning) Health, P.E or their electives (Art, Music and Technology.)

Tuesday and Wednesday the middle schooler’s started clubs, a period before lunch where students participate in a fun club of their choosing. The options are a reading and writing club, a STEAM club (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) and an outdoor and exercise club. Camilla and Isaac both partook in the reading and writing club in Camilla’s homeroom. In this club, the teacher gives a writing prompt and sometimes a short lesson/presentation about writing, then, students can free read, write or write to the prompt and share at the end.

The same days that clubs are on, the Garrison siblings also took their electives/specials. Camilla spent her forty five minutes in music class, where grades five through eight will help plan the annual winter concert, and Isaac spent their’s in Tech, hopefully exploring with the new apple computers in artificial intelligence and coding. While other students went off to art to start learning about designing structures in the first semester.

So far so good in terms of school, but now kids must get used to new school wake-up times for the bus, and a whole lot of sitting.
