Middle to High School Transition

Here’s an article written by my eighth grade coworker Suri Isom during our journalism unit. Check out Should Middle Schoolers be Dating? by Evary Almonte Ortiz, and COVID, Quarantine and Kids written by myself!

Middle School is quickly coming to an end, and many 8th graders are feeling a mix of emotions. Some of these emotions are nervous, happy,  and uncertain about some new changes they will face. We can see how a lot of students may already feel attached to their school and their friends, they can be nervous about meeting new people and trying to adjust to this new school environment.

One question I asked these 8th graders, who are graduating was, “How are you feeling about the transition from Middle School to High School?” One of the students I interviewed had expressed mixed emotions, to me saying, “I’m happy because it’s a new chapter in my life, it gives me more opportunities, but also not the happiest.” stating because she  already felt comfortable with the friends she made at school and the school itself. Also saying it’s a big transition .We can see here how students are already attached to the school and the friends they have already made, making many students nervous of getting to know new people and the school itself. Another student I interviewed shared that they have mixed emotions about moving to a new school. She  expressed that adjusting to a new environment might be challenging but also expressed excitement for a new change and different opportunities to get the chance to experience something new .

In my opinion,  the transition from Middle school to High school is both very exciting and nerve-wrecking. On one hand, it can be a little scary to be leaving something behind, for example the familiar environment of middle school, where I already know my classmates and teachers I have known for so long.  The thought of starting in a much bigger school, with new expectations, and responsibilities can be challenging and maybe overwhelming. But, I also see this change as a big opportunity for me and growth. I also think high school will offer new interests, new classes and different things. As people say, change is never easy but it really is an important part of life. While this translation to high school comes with being uncertain students are also excited for the new opportunities ahead and what comes next for them. Whether you're feeling nervous, anxious, or excited, hopefully this next chapter will be filled with growth, changes and some new experiences.
